THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT AND THE GLOBAL CARBON CYCLE (CIO)
Since the Industrial Revolution, the concentration of several so-called greenhouse gases (CO2 being the most prominent one) has risen very rapidly, due to human activities. However, if all CO2 produced by mankind would remain in the atmosphere, the increase would be twice as high. The research questions that must be answered are the following: By what mechanisms is the CO2 taken up? How variable and reliable is this uptake? Where does it occur? Can it be stimulated? The Centre for Isotope Research (CIO) employs detailed atmospheric greenhouse gas measurements, including isotopes, in close cooperation with several partner groups. The outcome of the research is of the utmost importance for science and for society (Kyoto-Protocol).
